In many ways confidence comes naturally for me. I can work on cars, motorcycles, electronics, construction and so on. Friends often call me "Handy Man McCann" (my last name), but in many ways my confidence is a struggle for me. Talking to new people, for example, is difficult for me. Talking to people in general can be difficult. I'm not a talkative guy. I'm the guy in the background, with my head down working hard. You could say I'm an introvert.
As a musician, and a music producer confidence is important even if it's a confidence that nobody else gets to see or notices. I would like to first point out that I'm speaking as a seasoned producer and not a newbie. As a noob everything is new. You're still figuring things out, and confidence just isn't going to be there. As an experienced producer though confidence plays can mean the difference between "the zone" and a case of writer's block.
Recently, I released a single which I thought was a banger. I thought it was going to chart, and chart well. My previous releases charted, and in my mind this track was better than the previous. I had a great vocalist; I thought I had a good marketing plan. It turns out that what I thought was wrong.
This hurt me. Not in the "oh woe is me I'm going to cry" sort of way, but in that it hurt my confidence. As I stated before there are some areas in which I am lacking confidence, and my music has always been one of them. Not because I think my music sucks, but because I'm a perfectionist and I'm never 100% happy with my music. There is always something I think I could have done better.
So, when my release didn't do as well as I expected my confidence took a hit. I came down with a bad case of writer's block that lasted for a couple of months. Time after time I would go into my studio and basically tinker around; never really accomplishing anything. It wasn't until I gave myself a good kick in the butt that I got my head in the game again. Confidence can be THAT important. So if you're having difficulties making progress or you trash every track you're making think about what could be the reason behind the problem, it could be your confidence.
P.S. Some people have too much confidence for the garbage music they put out. They think they are hot shit when actually they are just stinky shit!
